Mindless alliterations, unnecessary and stupid rhyming words, cars flying here and there and puke-evoking fight sequences are some of the vast list of givens in a Suraaj movie. Despite knowing all this, the only reason for which people still prefer to watch his movie is that a small portion in everyone’s heart still hopes that there might be at least some comedy sequences like Thalainagaram or Maruthamalai. He did give us a fair warning through Padikkathavan and Mappillai but we didn’t listen to him. The movie which started with a half filled theater ended with just me and a few more theater workers.

You don’t see many movies without any major promotions releasing nowadays. They either decorate the cities with the ’50 days’ poster even before its audio gets released or TV channels play serials and movies in between the movie’s trailer. Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom mainly used social networking sites for promotions (the trend that is catching up). This movie has still managed to be the talk of the town during its release – partly because of the promotions given by various cine personalities in social networking sites. In the era of ‘over hyped – under performing’ movies, Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom is the exact opposite.

There are (rather were) two kinds of commercial movies in Tamil Cinema. The movies made by KV Anand and the rest. He showed the world that even commercial movies can attain cult status and through Maattrraan he has given us a firm message that just because someone’s previous movie was brilliant, we can’t expect the same from him every time.

After the viral “Okay nu solran” speech by Mysskin, Mugamoodi has released with huge expectations. Mysskin claims that it is the first “superhero movie” coming out of Tamil Nadu. The Dark-Spider-Karate Kid a.k.a Mugamoodi is no exception to movies releasing with huge fanfare, and then colossally failing to meet expectations.

Disclosure: I’m an ardent Thala fan.
pre·quel /ˈprēkwəl/: Noun: A story or movie containing events that precede those of an existing work.
Perhaps Chakri Toleti should have learned this before writing the script but now it’s too late. The Godfather Part II was a prequel. X-men Origins was a prequel. Star Wars Prequel Trilogy was a prequel (a bad one though). What about the most anticipated movie of this year with the ever-stylish and charismatic hero and a franchise that knows no bounds?

Once upon a time, a three-legged tortoise was in search for its long lost two-headed tortoise cousin. It flew to the moon but accidentally landed on Neptune. It was captured by an alien group which was headed by George Clooney. It defeated most of the aliens and was waiting for the final confrontation with their leader. At that time it got a special power from the planet of Krypton with which Clooney was easily defeated. It again went in search for its cousin and finally found that he was killed long back in the hands of Clooney. The tortoise then returned to its home disappointed.

I had the exact same expression that you are having now after I watched Saguni. The word ‘logic’ was brutally destroyed in this movie. (more…)

“You can love him or hate him but you can’t ignore him” – this quote is best suited for the one known for his self confidence, passion and love for cinema, one who is not afraid to face even the Chief Minister, one who survived more than ten surgeries and is still trying to bring home the bacon, one of the very few gentlemen in Tamil cinema, one who is known for his hard work, and has been rightly brought to this world on May 1 – Ajith Kumar. Here are some of the best moments in his life – moments that we believe made him who he is now.

Oru Kal Oru Kannadi (OKOK) is the third flick of one of the very few directors who can handle the humour quotient perfectly – humour that actually makes the audience burst out in laughter. Though Santhanam is the one who is responsible for it, without Rajesh, it could have just been plain dull. OKOK does have the wittiness but the problem is that everything seems to be same old, same old.

A national award winning actor, a director who has assisted many noteworthy directors in epic movies, a heroine who is the daughter of the best actor Tamil cinema has ever seen and a massive hit song – when a movie with this kind of combo releases, one will at least expect a decent storyline but all that one gets after watching 3 (the title which no one has been able to decipher the meaning of) is three hours of crap.

A short film maker turning into a feature film director is common, but a short film being made as a full-length feature film is first of its kind. Balaji Mohan, renowned for his short film with the same name Kaathalil Sothappuvathu Eppadi which went viral on YouTube a couple of years back, has tried to make it a full length movie. Transforming a 10 minute long script into a 120 minute long movie is not an easy job and Balaji Mohan should be commended for the mere attempt of this herculean task.
