There are (rather were) two kinds of commercial movies in Tamil Cinema. The movies made by KV Anand and the rest. He showed the world that even commercial movies can attain cult status and through Maattrraan he has given us a firm message that just because someone’s previous movie was brilliant, we can’t expect the same from him every time.

Mugamoodi – The Velayudham within
After the viral “Okay nu solran” speech by Mysskin, Mugamoodi has released with huge expectations. Mysskin claims that it is the first “superhero movie” coming out of Tamil Nadu. The Dark-Spider-Karate Kid a.k.a Mugamoodi is no exception to movies releasing with huge fanfare, and then colossally failing to meet expectations.

Perhaps Chakri Toleti should have learned this before writing the script but now it’s too late. The Godfather Part II was a prequel. X-men Origins was a prequel. Star Wars Prequel Trilogy was a prequel (a bad one though). What about the most anticipated movie of this year with the ever-stylish and charismatic hero and a franchise that knows no bounds?

Saguni – Mokka is an understatement
Once upon a time, a three-legged tortoise was in search for its long lost two-headed tortoise cousin. It flew to the moon but accidentally landed on Neptune. It was captured by an alien group which was headed by George Clooney. It defeated most of the aliens and was waiting for the final confrontation with their leader. At that time it got a special power from the planet of Krypton with which Clooney was easily defeated. It again went in search for its cousin and finally found that he was killed long back in the hands of Clooney. The tortoise then returned to its home disappointed.
I had the exact same expression that you are having now after I watched Saguni. The word ‘logic’ was brutally destroyed in this movie. (more…)

உதயநிதி ஸ்டாலின் தனது குலத் தொழிலான அரசியலை விட்டுவிட்டு நடிகராக அறிமுகமாகியிருக்கும் படம். நடிகராகத் தான் அறிமுகமாகியிருக்கிறாரே தவிர ஹீரோவாக இல்லை! படத்தின் ஹீரோ யார் என்பது படித்துக்கொண்டிருக்கும் உங்களுக்கே தெரிந்திருக்கும். சரி படத்தின் கதையைப் பற்றி எழுதலாம் என்று நினைக்கும்போது தான் ஞாபகம் வருகிறது அப்படியொன்று படத்தில் இல்லவே இல்லை என்பது! நீங்கள் படத்தைப் பார்த்துவிட்டு துலாவி துலாவி மைக்ரோஸ்கோபில் தேடிப் பார்த்தாலும் படத்தில் கதையைக் கண்டுபிடிக்க முடியாது. கதையே இல்லாமல் எப்படி ஒரு படம் எடுத்து அதை வெற்றிப் படமாக்குவது எப்படி என்பதை கோடம்பாக்கத்து இளம் இயக்குனர்கள் இப்படத்தின் இயக்குனர் ராஜேஷ் வீட்டின் முன் வரிசையில் நின்று கற்றுகொள்ளலாம். சந்தானம் + ராஜேஷ் ஒரு வெற்றிக் கூட்டணி என்பது மீண்டும் ஒரு முறை இந்த படத்தின் மூலம் நிரூபணமாகி உள்ளது. ஆனாலும் முந்தைய படமான பாஸ் என்கிற பாஸ்கரன் அடைந்த உயரத்தையும் வெற்றியையும் இந்தப் படத்தால் நெருங்க முடியவில்லை என்பதே நிதர்சனமான உண்மை.

OKOK – Santhanam’s Playground
Oru Kal Oru Kannadi (OKOK) is the third flick of one of the very few directors who can handle the humour quotient perfectly – humour that actually makes the audience burst out in laughter. Though Santhanam is the one who is responsible for it, without Rajesh, it could have just been plain dull. OKOK does have the wittiness but the problem is that everything seems to be same old, same old.

இந்த படம் பார்த்து விட்டு வெளியே வந்ததும் என் மனதில் எழுந்த முதல் கேள்வி ஏன் இந்த படத்திற்கு மூன்று என பெயர் வைத்தார்கள் என்பது! ஒருவேளை ரசிகர்கள் அனைவரும் தங்களது உயிரை பணயம் வைத்து மூன்று மணி நேரம் திரையரங்கில் இப்படத்தைப் பார்த்ததை பாராட்டும் நோக்கில் வைத்திருக்கலாம் என்று நானே என் மனதை தேற்றிக்கொண்டேன். இதைப் படித்தவுடனேயே படம் எப்படி என்று உங்களுக்கு தெரிந்திருக்கும். இன்னும் உங்களுக்குப் படத்தைப் பற்றி தெரிந்து கொள்ள ஆர்வம் இருந்தால் மேலே படியுங்கள்.

3 – Hours of Crap
A national award winning actor, a director who has assisted many noteworthy directors in epic movies, a heroine who is the daughter of the best actor Tamil cinema has ever seen and a massive hit song – when a movie with this kind of combo releases, one will at least expect a decent storyline but all that one gets after watching 3 (the title which no one has been able to decipher the meaning of) is three hours of crap.
